Minister Kasaija declared unopposed for Buyanja County as sole opponent withdraws from race

The minister of finance, planning, and economic development Hon. Matia Kasaija who also doubles as the Member of Parliament Buyanja County has been declared unopposed after his sole rival competitor Paul Kyalimpa withdrew from the race.

In a letter dated December 7, 2020, addressed to the Electoral Commission (EC) secretary, the returning officer for Kibaale Aggrey James Ipeto declared Kasaija unopposed and winner of the constituency after Kyalimpa wrote to the commission withdrawing from the race.

“Please refer to the attached copy of the withdrawal letter and declaration by the returning officer of Matia Kasaija as unopposed for Buyanja County in Kibaale Electoral District,” the letter read in part.

Kyalimpa was contesting as an independent candidate after he lost to Kasaija in the NRM party primaries.

Reliable sources told Daily Express that Kyalimpa withdrew after he was appointed the Deputy Director-General of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).

Speaking to the Daily Express, Kyalimpa confirmed that he had withdrawn from the race to serve the country in another capacity.

“I decided to withdraw so that I can serve the country in another capacity because I’m qualified in that field more than politics. The problem with our people is regarding politics as a job and not as service,” said Kyalimpa.
