110 people arrested for Not Wearing Face Masks, Police confirms

Police have confirmed a total of 110 suspects were arrested for not wearing face masks and charged for doing acts that are like to cause the spread of Coronavirus disease – Covid-19.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango who revealed to the Daily Express, he says operations to enforce COPs started on Thursday in the central business district area and will spread to other parts of the city.

Onyango states that they targeted pedestrians who were not wearing face masks and business owners who were not abiding by the set guidelines by the Ministry of Health.

“Some people have relaxed in terms of putting on masks so the operation is to enforce the directives and it will continue from today onwards,” he said.

These also include managers of several arcades and shopping malls in the city who are accused of deliberately ignoring the standard operating procedures such as provision of hand washing equipment among others.

Suspects are being detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala awaiting to appear in courts of law.

Covid-19 cases and deaths have recently continued to surge in the country, with the highest record of positive cases at 1,199 recorded on Wednesday.
