Ingrid Turinawe and two senior members expelled from FDC

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has expelled Ingrid Turinawe the head of the Women league and two senior party members from the party for going against the party constitution to stand as independent candidates in next year’s elections.

In a December 7th 2020 letter addressed to FDC Chairperson Rukungiri District and signed by the party Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the 3 people who were dismissed are Ingrid Turinawe Kamateneti, Darius Tweyambe and Winnie Babihuga.

The 3 contested in the FDC primary elections and lost, but despite warnings from the party leaders, decided to contest as independents.

Ingrid Turinawe who is the FDC National Women Chairperson contested for Rukungiri Municipality MP seat and lost to new comer Dr Wallen Tumwine Nuwagaba.

On the other hand, Winnie Babihuga contested for Rukungiri District Woman MP seat and lost to Hon Betty Muzanira while Darius Tweyambe contested for Rukungiri Municipality Mayoral Chairperson seat and lost to incumbent Charles Makuru.

Article 12(d) on Cessation states that, “If a member joins another party or in an election stands as an independent ceases to be a member of FDC.

“The entire public is hereby informed that these independent candidates are not members of FDC and have no moral authority to act on behalf of FDC,” Mafabi said in the statement.

FDC  also announced its official candidates in  Rukungiri were, Dr. Wallen Nuwagaba Tumwine (Rukungiri Municipality), Betty Muzanira (Woman MP Rukungiri),  Charles Maharu (Mayor Rukungiri Municipality) Fred Turyamuhweza (Rujumbura Constituency) and Naboth Namanya (Rubabo County).

Nandala also urged the FDC members and party structures of Rukungiri to only solicit support for FDC candidates. 

“Any member of the party who campaigns for an independent candidate or otherwise shall be expelled from the party,” Mafabi warned.

“The independent candidate should immediately stop using the FDC sign and colours otherwise we shall advise the Electoral Commission to disqualify them” the letter reads in parts.

Nandala Mafabi said that the independent candidates are not members of FDC and have no moral authority to act on behalf of FDC.
