126 NUPsupporters to enter new year in police custody

KAMPALA: A total of 126 youths who were arrested in Kalangala on Wednesday as Police tried to stop the National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi from addressing a rally on the Island will enter the New year 2021 in custody as police wait for their files to be sanctioned by the Resident State Attorney.

Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga on Thursday noted that the joint task team of investigators, comprising of CCTV analysts, cybercrime, intelligence, and Criminal Investigations Directorate experts had thoroughly interviewed some of the suspects who were caught on surveillance videos and intelligence leads.

He noted that the operation was aimed at containing acts of impunity and lawlessness, during the political campaigns in Kalangala.

“A total of 90 suspects who formed part of the violent mobile teams from Kampala, were on Wednesday arrested and transferred to the Region at Greater Masaka, where statements were recorded from them, on allegations of incitement to violence, disobedience of lawful orders, inconsiderate use of the roads, and negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious disease. Another subsidiary group of 26 suspects from the community in Kalangala, were also questioned and their statements recorded on similar allegations,” Enanga said.

Police noted that the violent group of suspects associated with NUP, have been working falsely as a parallel but illegal government and actively involved in acts of intimidation and lawlessness across different parts of the country.

“The operation, therefore, was aimed at keeping all Ugandans safe and to help eliminate all continuous acts of impunity, lawlessness, and political violence, during the ongoing campaigns and electoral events. A total of six motor vehicles and 20 motorcycles were impounded and exhibited,” Enanga said.

On Wednesday police restrained Kyagulanyi from addressing a rally in Kalangala and arrested most of his aides. He was later airlifted to his home in Magere in Wakiso district.

Among those arrested and were part of Kyagulanyi’s inner circle include Musician Nubian Li, Edward Ssebuufu popularly known as Eddy Mutwe, and Dan Magic.
