MBALE, UGANDA: The Bamaasaba (Bugisu) community are mourning the death of their former Umukuka (Chief Elder) Bob Mushikori who breathed his last on Monday evening.
Emma Bwayo, the State Minister for Cooperatives, Production and Marketing in Inzu Ya Masaba confirmed Mushikori’s death, saying he is waiting for his colleagues to arrive and take the body to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.
“I am not sure what killed him. I was the first official to arrive here. I am waiting for my colleagues to arrive and we take the body to the mortuary for postmortem as we wait for his family,” he said.
Mushikori’s death comes after plans are underway to enthrone his successor, John Amram Wagabyalire.
Mushikori replaced Amb. Wilson Wamimbi, for the position of Chief Elder which he held until last year when his term ended.
The Umukuka is the custodian of culture and other communal assets . He oversees over both Bugisu here in Uganda and in Kenya.
The Bagisu do not have a King as it is in other Ugandan tribes but rather a “Umukuka” Chief Elder who serves for a term limit of five years.
