Nubian Li, Eddie Mutwe & NUP campaign to be charged by Court Martial

A total of 46 National Unity Platform supporters and members of Bobi Wine’s campaign team who were arrested in Kalangala district days ago are slated to appear before the General Court Martial.

The 46 are part of the total of 106 NUP supporters who were arrested in Kalangala on December 30th. The rest were later released on bail.

The team which was granted bail by Masaka Chief Magistrate Charles Yeteise on Monday was rearrested and whisked away to Makindye Military Barracks where they will face the General Court Martial.

According to reports, the suspects who include singer Nubian Li and Bobi Wine’s bodyguard Eddy Mutwe, were yesterday Thursday intercepted on a Prison bus shortly after their release and diverted to Kampala.

NUP secretary general, Mr David Lewis Rubongoya later confirmed that these had been taken to Makindye Military Barracks in Kampala.

Addressing this matter this morning, Uganda Prisons Commissioner General Johnson Byabashaija confirmed that the Prisons Authority had been ordered to deliver the suspects to the General Court Martial.

He said, “We also we received (Production Warrant) from General Court Martial. We acted accordingly. You can’t take suspects to court when you know you are to bring them back to custody,”

It was still unclear what charges the NUP supporters are likely to face before the army court.

The Masaka Court had charged the suspects with inciting violence and committing a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease, before granting them bail.
