11 Candidates in the race for Kampala Lord Mayor Seat

The Electoral Commission (EC) in October nominated a total of 11 candidates for Kampala City lord mayor position of which the elections are slated to take place on Wednesday January 20, 2021.

The leading battle is between the incumbent Kampala Lord mayor, Erias Lukwago of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC); Ms Nabilah Naggayi Sempala (National Unity Platform), Joseph Mayanja alias Chameleone (Independent) and Musician Daniel Kazibwe, aka Ragga Dee, ticket holder for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Others in the race are Charles James Ssenkubuge (Democratic Party), Isaac Sendagire, Eddie Bazira Kibalama, Ben Lule and Innocent Kawooya, all running as Independents.

Notably a 23-year-old social worker Yakub Mayanja Musaazi, (Alliance for National Transformation) and another 24-year-old Micheal Evans Mugabi contesting as an Independent are also in the race to make up the 11 candidates.

Mr Frederick Muwaya Tibakuno, the district registrar and returning officer in Kampala says there are 36 contenders for division mayors, and 484 for Kampala Capital City Authority councilors and 2,904 for division councilors.

Elections for the Lord Mayors, Division Mayors, Lord Councilors, District Chairpersons and District councilors will take place on Wednesday (tomorrow) January 20, 2021 from 7:00am to 4:00pm (EAT).

Christopher Iga was the first mayor of Kampala from 1989 to 1997 and was replaced by the late John Ssebaana Kizito (DP) who served twice as Kampala City mayor from 1998-2006.

In 2006, The late Nasser Ntege Ssebagala was elected as a Mayor on the DP ticket and served until 2011 when the incumbent Erias Lukwago replaced him also on the DP ticket to-date.
