KAMPALA, UGANDA:– Cabinet is scheduled to meet today and discuss, among other things, the reopening of schools.
This was revealed by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, while addressing members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary caucus on Saturday at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.
The minister has urged MPs to support and explain to the public the Government’s position on the reopening of schools and higher institutions of learning.
Schools were closed in March last year to curb the spread of COVID-19. Candidate classes and finalists in higher institutions of learning were, however, allowed to go back after the Government relaxed some of the restrictions.
Last week, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) ordered universities and other tertiary institutions that had already planned to reopen to halt physical reopening for the next three months as they study the Covid-19 threat in the country.
The cabinet sitting comes at a time when Universities such as Makerere and Kyambogo have suspended full reopening for freshers and other continuing students.
