BUHWEJU, DISTRICT: Residents of Kyesika Village, Katara parish, Karungu Sub County, Buhweju district were left in shock when a collapsing tree fell on a house killing 7 people on spot during a heavy down pour that lasted for several hours on Thursday February 18th 2021.
The dead were four members of the same family (three children and a mother) and three neighbors.
Mr. Simon Baguma Tuwangye, the Kyesika village chairperson confirmed that three children, their mother and other three neighbors died on spot when a tree collapsed on the house belonging to Mr. Crescent Asiimwe.
The victims had sought shelter from heavy rain when the tree reportedly to have been moved by a landslide fell on the house.
Mr. Baguma identified the deceased as Thomas 17 years, Annah 06, Agaba one year together with their mother, Ms. Jovita Kyogabirwe, 30 years.
Others were Ms. Shallon Ampiire, Theopista Keminagano and an un identified baby girl. The unidentified baby girl died as she was being taken to the nearby clinic in the neighboring Mbarara district.
The Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, Mr. Martial Tumusiime confirmed the incident, but said information was still scanty.
In a related incident, another house belonging to Mr. Justus Kamanyiiro, a resident of Akatambiro trading center, a few kilometers from the scene was swept away by running water.
Seven occupants were saved by neighbors, but household items were swept away. None of the occupants was injured.
