UNMA HEAD OFFICE, ENTEBBE: The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has spoken out on the current warm night conditions saying it is a result of the heat that is released by land and buildings.
In a Friday statement issued by the UNMA Executive Director, Dr Festus Luboyera, the heat that is released by land and buildings at night, is absorbed during the day when the sun is scorching.
“The current warm nights being experienced are a result of the cloudiness we are having at night. During the day, the land and buildings normally absorb radiation from the sun, storing it and later releasing it in form of heat,” said Luboyera.
Most parts of the country especially those around the Lake Victoria Basin, are presently experiencing cloudiness at night and these clouds, Luboyera said, are trapping outgoing heat thus building up air temperatures at night.
He explained that the night cloudiness is normally expected as we transition from dry to wet season.
The fact that warm nights are favourable for mosquitoes to breed and multiply, Luboyera cautioned Ugandans to sleep under treated mosquito nets.
“The warm nights are contributing to a surge in mosquitoes due to favourable temperatures that are supporting the breeding of mosquitoes. Consequently, the public is cautioned to sleep under mosquito nets, sleep in well-ventilated houses, drink lots of fluids,” he said.
“Generally, the warm nights are expected to last for 7 days and thereafter night temperatures will begin to normalize,” Luboyera explained.
