Uganda Hippos striker Derrick Kakooza and defender Abdu Azizi Kayondo were named in the Total 2021 AFCON U20 Best XI of the tournament despite losing out to Ghana in the finals in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
Head coach Morley Byekwaso was also named the tournament’s best coach after guiding debutants Uganda Hippos to the final and putting up a spirited display to be runners up in the 16th edition of the AFCON U20 finals.
Kakooza who plies his trade for Vipers SC in the UGanda Premier League is a no surprise to be on the best XI having finished top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals in 6 games including a thrilling hat-trick against Tunisia as Uganda thumped the North African giants 4-1 in the semi finals.
Ghana who were crowned champions have two players on the Best XI with goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, 20, joining winger Abdul Fatawu Issahak who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Gabon who finished second runners up after defeating Tunisia 4-2 in penalties for the third place playoffs have two players on the team. These are centre back Jamara Lamin and midfielder Lamarana Jallow.
Burkina Faso’s left footed winger Joffrey Baize makes the team joining Fatawu and Kakooza in the three-man attack.
Chiheb Labdi and El Mehdi El Moubarik of Tunisia and Morocco respectively join Lamarama in midfield while Cameroon’s Blondon Meyapya and Flory Yangao of Central African Republic complete the back line.
