Kira municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has promised to perform better than the current Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga if elected to replace her as Speaker of the coming 11th Parliament.
He made the promise on Tuesday as he officially declared his bid to contest for the position of Parliament Speaker in the 11 Parliament which starts in May.
“I would like to take this opportunity to formally inform the country that I will be contesting for elections for the Speaker when the 11th Parliament is sworn in, in May this year.
“My candidature is to provide an alternative to the people of Uganda. We should not leave the race to only the ruling party because, under multiparty democracy, the opposition has to front an alternative to all Government positions,” Ssemujju said.
Later, he told journalists that “Kadaga and Oulanyah (Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah) have both served very well but I am going to outshine their achievements if given the chance. If the Almighty Allah gives me life and I am sworn in May.”
Ssemujju who doubles as Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) spokesperson and opposition chief whip will now have to face off with incumbent Kadaga and Oulanyah, who have also declared intentions to contest for the country’s third most influential job.
