UPDATE: City lawyer Bob Kasango will be laid to rest on Sunday (March 28, 2021) at midday in Gweri, Fort Portal City, a source close to his family has said.
Seasoned journalist Andrew Mwenda, who is close to the Kasango family, tweeted on Saturday: “After yesterday’s court ruling, the burial of Robert Kasango will take place in Gweri, Fort Portal City, tomorrow (Sunday, March 28th) at 12 noon!”
On Friday, the High Court ruled in favour of Kasango’s widow, Nice Bitarabeho Kasango, and directed that he be buried in Fort Portal within four days from the date of the ruling.
The ruling came on the back of a family battle over where the lawyer should be buried. His mother, Rose Kabise, insisted that Kasango should be laid to rest in Tororo, where he hails from.
Mid-this month, Kasango’s widow ran to court over the matter.
On Friday, nearly a month after Kasango’s death in Luzira Prison, judge Lydia Mugambe settled the matter.
In her ruling, Justice Lydia Mugambe said that during the cross-examination on Tuesday, between the complainant (Nice Kasango) and the respondent (Rose Kabise) and her team, she established that the late Kasango was not from Tororo. Instead, he was a Musoga from Iganga district, whose parents had migrated to Mubende district in Buganda region.
She also directed that the police and the local council of Gweri in Fort Portal take charge of the burial and ensure that the deceased is granted a decent burial.
Court also directed that his mother’s family be allowed to attend the burial. But after the ruling, Kabise and her team said they would not attend the interment.
