2 dead, scores injured as church roof collapses in Butaleja

BUTALEJA DISTRICT – At least two worshippers have been confirmed dead and 14 others seriously nursing injuries in Butaleja district following collapse of a church roof in which they had gathered for Wednesday evening prayers.

The incident happened at Namulemu Catholic church in Namulemu cell, Lujehe ward in Butaleja town council.

Bukedi region Police Spokesperson, Mr Moses Mugwe said by the time police arrived at the scene for rescue, two people had died.

The deceased have been identified as Angela Namulwa, 50, and another one only identified as Magdalene, 70.

The injured were identified as Henry Manyandi, 23; Wilfred Kadimba, 45; Petrina Masawe, 35; and Suzan Nahalomo, 35.

Others include Petwa Nabigi, 40; Pauline Namusene, 11, a pupil at Lunghele primary school in Butaleja town council; Margret Munaba, 23. Another victim was not yet identified by press time.

In a space of less than a month, this is the second time a church roof collapses on worshippers, the latest being in Kampala where a city building roof at Fido-dido building collapsed and killed 3 church members, injuring many.
