Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) council has resolved to rename Nsambya Estates Road after the late Archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.
The motion to honor the late Archbishop’s effort and contribution to the development of the Catholic church was presented by KCCA Speaker Abubaker Kawalya who hailed Lwanga as a staunch advocate of good governance and human rights.
The Wednesday’s plenary at City Hall in Kampala honored Lwanga for his tremendous contribution to the growth of Centenary Bank, renovation of Namugongo Marty’s Shrine, and founding the Wekembe Microfinance Village Bank.
Nsambya Estate Road, the road to be named after the prelate stretches from Total Petrol station Nsambya to St. Joseph Girls School Nsambya through St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya Catholic Church, Catholic Secretariat to the American Embassy, White Fathers’ headquarters up to KFC Kabalagala.
The council meeting also resolved amidst protest from some members that a road should be named in memory of the late Hajj Musa Katongole, the founder of Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA).
However, the City executive committee was tasked to identify a road.
Fatuma Nsereko, Woman Councilor Kampala Central asked the Council to fast track an earlier decision to honour former Kampala Mayor Yofesi Walusimbi Mpanga and the first Speaker of Kampala City Council, Abdul Nsereko.
Nsereko says council needs also to appreciate and recognize people while they are still alive.
Last year council resolved to name Dastur Street in Central Division after former City Mayor Nasser Ntege Ssebaggala. However, the council was told that the technical team at KCCA has not yet effected the decision. The decision to name Dastur was taken last year as the KCCA council paid its last respects to Ssebaggala.
