The Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) on Tuesday sentenced two Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers for killing a driver in Apaa Market in November 2020.
The Court-Martial chaired by Lt. Col. George Nambafu sitting at the UPDF 4th Division Court Martial in Gulu found Private Opiyo Morris Taban, 31, guilty of murder and Lance Corporal Lovis Okello guilty of Malicious damage to property.
Subsequently, Opio has been sentenced Opio to 10 years in Prison and his co-accused, Okello to a fine of 2 million shillings, or 2 years in jail upon default.
The rangers are attached to Murchison Falls National Park.
Vincent Opio, the truck driver met his death at Luyima junction in Apaa trading center on November 13th last year.
A scuffle broke out between Opio, and a team of UWA rangers and UPDF where Opio was fatally shot.
The Court-Martial Chair said the evidence presented by both the Prosecution and witnesses, including market vendors, post mortem results among others were sufficient to prove the accused persons guilty.
