The Kigezi Diocese Bishop, Rt.Rev. Eng George Bagamuhunda has announced that he is taking an early retirement from his clerical duties from the helm of the Diocese.
Bagamuhunda who has been the Bishop of the diocese since 2014 says his request to retire early was granted by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Steven Kazimba Mugalu who allowed him to serve until June 2022.
He made the announcement over the weekend during the Diocesan council meeting that was held at the synod hall, at St. Peters Rugarama. He said that he feels like he no longer has the strength to keep serving efficiently in the current capacity and would love to step down.
“I and my family were very appreciative to the Christians in the diocese for their endless support, encouragement and warm fellowship given to us during our tenure,” Said Bishop Bagamuhunda.
He noted that the Archbishop has already notified the Diocesan Chancellor about the development.
Canon Johnson Baryantuma Munono, the Kigezi diocese head of laity appreciated the good work that bishop Bagamuhunda has done in the last few years he has been the bishop citing the building of hostel at Rugarama school of nursing, starting a pension scheme for retired clergy, stating children churches in the diocese, starting the diocesan radio revival radio among others.
Bishop Bagamuhunda was enthroned as the 5th bishop of Kigezi Diocese on January 19th, 2014 at St Peter’s cathedral Rugarama replacing Bishop George Katwesigye.
