NUP’s Joel Ssenyonyi swears in as Nakawa West MP

PARLIAMENT: The National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi, has today taken his oath as duly elected Member of Parliament to represent Nakawa West constituency in the 11th Parliament until 2026.

Soon after his swearing, Sseyonyi said that he will use the law and his position as a member of parliament to fight injustices in the country.

Ssenyonyi who was initially expected to take oath on Thursday, May 20, 2021, was given permission to take his oath after requesting Parliament on the ground that he is scheduled to travel out of the country on official duties, assigned by his party.

Ssenyonyi has also been one of the 12,550 candidates to graduate from Makerere University as the university kicked off its 71st graduation ceremony today.

He explained the challenges he went through at the School of Law at Makerere University expressing his joy for having completed his studies successfully.

“I have become a lawyer after graduating from Makerere Law School. The 4 years were tough, having to juggle law school with many other aspects of my life, but God has been faithful,” he wrote.

After being conferred his law degree, Ssenyonyi later went to Parliament to take his oath of office as Nakawa West MP.

“Later in the day I was sworn in as MP-Nakawa West. May God help me to use these two platforms to fight injustice,” he said.

Parliament yesterday administered oaths to 131 MPs-elect of the eleventh parliament on the first day of the four-day-long ceremonies.

Although the house had planned to administer oaths for 132 legislators on the first day of the exercise, two of the elected members did not turn up.

Upon taking the oaths, the MPs were handed instruments of power, including the Uganda Constitution and the Parliament Rules of Procedure.
