Omoro County MP Jacob Oulanyah has been voted the new speaker of the 11th Parliament. Oulanyah will now hold his first sitting as Speaker to head over the voting for the deputy speaker position.
Oulanyah who has been the Deputy Speaker for the 10th Parliament will lead the 11th Parliament for the next five years. The voting process took place at Kololo Independence Grounds on Monday May 24, 2021 presided over by the Chief Justice Owiny Dollo.
The race for speakership was a tight one with Oulanya defeating his former boss and NRM big wig Rebecca Kadaga who has been the speaker of parliament since 2011 and was contesting for a third term.
Oulanyah trounced Kadaga to the prized position with 310 votes while Kadaga collected only 197 votes. FDC candidate Ssemujju Nganda trailed with 15 votes.
Oulanyah who has been deputy Speaker for 10 years will now be in charge of affairs at the August House for the nexr five years,a position he missed out narrowly after stepping down for Kadaga on advice of the Central Executive Committee, the ruling NRM party’s top organ.
On Sunday, CEC endorsed Oulanyah to come unopposed as the party flag bearer but Kadaga decided to stand on the independent ticket.
