Makindye division Lord Councilor, Zahrah Luyirika Ssekibaala of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been voted the new speaker of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
Zahrah who recently defeated four men to the NUP flag got 43 votes from NUP dominated councillors.
She takes over from Lubaga North elected MP Hon Abubaker Kawalya who was the first elected speaker of the recently concluded amendment of the KCCA Act.
The position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker was introduced during the Amendment of the KCCA Act in 2019. The speaker who is elected from among the councillors is mandated to preside over council sittings, pass the budget and laws and also have a watchful eye on activities of KCCA.
Luyirika has promised to be an independent speaker who shall give a voice to all councillors.
Luyirika also promised to put to the front issues of garbage collection and high taxes met by the people of Kampala.
She further promised to fight for the welfare of political leaders, spearhead the formation of SACCOs and also ensure councillors get a lounge since the previous one has since been turned into office space.
