Police raids Levels Lounge in Kamwokya, 36 arrested

Police in Kampala on Wednesday night raided Levels Lounge in Kamwokya and arrested 36 revelers for flouting he Covid-19 guidelines.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the raid. 

‘The territorial Police at Kampala Metropolitan has conducted an operation and a total of 36 revelers have been arrested from  Levels Lounge Located in Kamwokya,’ Owoyesigyire said. 

He noted that the suspects include 14 women and 22 men . ‘They are currently detained at Kiira Road Police station on allegations of doing a negligent act likely to spread an infection of disease. We shall arraign them in court for penalties, as we await the fine structure from the Ministry of Finance,’ he added.

President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday while addressing the nation and announcing the new measures aimed at fighting Covid-19 noted that suspects who are arrested should not be taken to prison but rather pay fines that would be gazetted by the Ministry of Finance.

Bars were  among places closed in March last year as a measure to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Illegal bar operations have however continued. Last weekend police arrested 1,100 people. In the previous weekend over 2,400 were netted in bars around Kampala.
