Uganda’s golden boy Joshua Cheptegei experienced his first loss in the 5,000m race after finishing sixth in the 2021 Diamond League that happened in Italy on Thursday. He posted a duration of 12:54.69 to fall to sixth position.
Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men’s 5,000m in a European record of 12:48.45. Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet crossed the finish line in second position with a time of 12:49.02 while Canadian Moh Ahmed earned a third-place with 12:50.12.
This becomes Cheptegei’s first loss in over two years in the highly anticipated race with his last loss coming in July 2019 at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he finished in fourth.
Cheptegei, the world record holder in the 5,000m however still stands as the overwhelming favourite to win gold in the 2021 Olympics slated to happen in Tokyo this year.
