MBARARA: Former Daily Monitor Bureau chief for Rwenzori Sub-region Mr. Felix Basiime has died, the Daily Express News reports.
Basiime was on Thursday night pronounced dead at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where he had been admitted battling the deadly Covid-19 disease.
Prior to his transfer to Rwenzori, Basiime served as Monitor Publications Ltd’s bureau chief in Mbarara. His reporting was primarily focused on environmental issues and tourism, with an emphasis on oil, gas, and other extractive industries.
Basiime won multiple of internal awards at the Daily Monitor, and his reporting was recognized by the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).
Basiime graduated from The Uganda Pentecostal University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication and holds four certificates in environmental journalism from Makerere University.
He received professional training in both data journalism and health reporting through the African Centre for Media Excellence.
He has been a member of the Water & Environment Media Network Uganda (WEMNET), a professional NGO of journalists reporting on water and environment in Uganda.
Basiime nurtured many young journalists, especially in the western part of Uganda.
“The death of Felix Basiime is a big blow to journalism. He gave Tooro platform in Daily Monitor and nurtured a lot of young talent. His byline remains a testament of good old journalism. Journalism has lost an activist and teacher,” fellow journalist, Mr Raymond Mujuni eulogized.
