KAMPALA: As the fight against Covid-19 rages on with positive cases on a spike, UMC Victoria Hospital in Bukoto has announced a reduction in the fees for Covid19 treatment with extended free beds for healthcare workers.
This is in response to the recent public outcry on the raised charges in most private health facilities and a strain the health system, especially in Kampala.
According to Dr Edrine Juuko, the medical director at UMC hospital, Covid-19 patients who will be admitted at the hospital’s annex wing will be charged between Shs 400,000 and Shs 600,000 a day.
The move by the hospital to reduce charges will be welcomed by members of the public who have complained about the exorbitant fees charged by some private medical facilities to access Covid-19 treatment.
“As a hospital, we have opened a low-cost unit annex wing which at the site formerly occupied by Kadic hospital. The wing will handle exclusively Covid-19 cases,” Juuko said.
He said that health workers recommended by the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) will not be charged for bed and food in the beds reserved for them.
