Facebook Appoints Uganda’s Neema Iyer to its Advisory Board

Facebook has appointed Ugandan tech enthusiast Neema Iyer to its newly launched Global Women’s Safety Advisory Board.

Neema Iyer an artist and technologist, was recently appointed by Facebook as a Global Women’s Safety Expert advisor with 12 other members from all over the world.

The Facebook Global Women’s safety advisory board will advise Facebook whenever it’s developing new policies, products and programs related to women’s safety.

Commenting on the announcement, Facebook’s Safety Policy Manager for Africa Middle East and Turkey Sylvia Musalangani said, “Women’s safety is an important issue around the globe and we are committed to keeping women safe from abuse, exploitation and harassment online and offline which is why we’ve established this advisory board to guide us on our policies, tools, and resources and also share their insights on key issues facing women in their communities.”

The 12 Global Women’s Safety Expert Advisors are nonprofit leaders, activists and academic experts working with over 200 organizations and experts in women’s safety across the world. These women were instrumental in the creation of the Facebook Safety Center, and will be meeting quarterly.

According to online sources, the move is part of the tech company’s commitment to women’s safety. And by doing so, Facebook has joined other big tech companies in the Web Foundation’s commitment to women’s safety. 

This is supported by a letter signed by 150 prominent women from across six continents including Emma Watson, Ashley Judd, Gemma Chan, and Aranya Johar.

Former presidents and prime ministers including Michelle Bachelet, Julia Gillard, and Helen Clark, journalists including Maria Ressa and Femi Oke, and sports icons like Billie Jean King.

Who’s Neema Iyer

According to her LinkedIn profile, Iyer is a technologist, based between Frankfurt, Germany and Kampala, Uganda. 

Neema has done tremendous work through feminist research and tackles subjects such as digital inclusion and digital rights.

She is also the founder of Pollicy, a civic technology organization based in Kampala, Uganda and is a co-host on the Terms and Conditions podcast. She discusses what this new role means to her and her desire to increase safety in digital spaces.
