Who is Prof Anthony Mbonye: Full Biography of former director-general Health Services

DECEASED: Former Makerere and UCU Lecturer, Prof. Anthony Mbonye has died

KAMPALA: The State House of Uganda on Sunday morning announced the death of Prof. Kabanza Anthony Mbonye, the husband to outgoing Statehouse Comptroller, Mrs. Lucy Nakyobe Mbonye.

“We regret to announce the passing of Prof. Anthony Kabanza Mbonye, husband to Lucy Nakyobe Mbonye, the out going State house comptroller,” State House tweeted on Sunday.

Prof Anthony Mbonye who was a Professor at the School of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University; and Uganda Christian University also served as director-general for Health Services in the Health Ministry, a position currently occupied by Dr. Henry G Mwebesa.

But Who is Prof Anthony Mbonye?

Born in Rwenkobwa, Ibanda District, Western Uganda, Anthony Kabanza Mbonye studied his early school and high school in Uganda and went on to graduate as a medical doctor from Makerere University in 1986.

He did a masters in public health from The University of Liverpool, UK and PHD on malaria in pregnancy from University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

He also studied from The Royal College of Physicians (UK) where he did public health.

Mbonye was Assistant Commissioner of Health Services-Reproductive Health from 2002 to 2008.

During this time, he ranked No. 23 among the most important Ugandans in a survey carried out by the Monitor, the most popular newspaper for demonstrating leadership in promoting maternal health and carrying out research to improve public health in Uganda.

In December 2011, he ranked the best health worker in Uganda for leadership in fighting Ebola Epidemic and Yellow Fever and was also awarded the Uganda Medical Association’s Order of Merit in honour of a distinguished carrier to promote maternal health in Uganda in 2009.

He was awarded the distinguished Golden Independence Jubilee Medal for leading promotion of maternal health and control of Ebola in Uganda in 2015.

Prof Mbonye was Acting Director-General of Health Services, Ministry of Health, Uganda from 2016 to 2017.

Articles, Books written by Dr. Anthony Mbonye

Prof Mbonye has written many articles in peer-reviewed journals and Three books about Health and social economics.

In July 2017 he was awarded the distinguished Merge Horn Award by the USAID Department of Reproductive Health for ground breaking research on introducing injectable contraceptives at a community level in Uganda

He was also awarded the distinguished Golden Independence Jubilee Medal for leading promotion of maternal health and control of Ebola in Uganda.
