Police in Moroto District together with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Tuesday raided and impounded 259 bags of counterfeit sugar which was being repackaged for export.
Police says they acted intelligence received from reliable sources that there were unscrupulous people who were re-packaging sugar from Nakiloro village, Nakiloro parish, Rupa sub-county in Moroto district.
After receiving information, the officer in charge of Moroto police informed the tax body in the district and responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, Mike Longole, the Regional Police Spokesperson said, the suspects fled the scene and left the sugar behind.
It has been established that the group was repacking Ugandan sugar into Kenyan sacks.
“Information has it that the persons involved in this business buy sugar from Mayuge sugar factory, transport it to the above address where they change it from Mayuge sugar factory sacks to Kabaras sugar factory sacks, a Kenyan sugar company,” Longole said.
A total of 250 bags of sugar were found in a store, a generator and a machine used for sealing the sacks.
Police and URA security operatives remain deployed at the scene as investigations continue under a
case of Counterfeit on products and trademarks opened at CPS Moroto.
