English Premier League – Saturday 14, August
Manchester United 5-1 Leeds (Bruno Fernandes 30′, 54′, 60′, Mason Greenwood 54′ Fred 68′)
Bruno Fernandes scored a sensational 30-minute hat-trick as Manchester United defeated Leeds United 5-1 to kickoff their 2021/22 Premier League season to a magnificent and exciting start.
Fernandes, who finished as the club’s top scorer last season with 28 goals in all competitions opened the scoring after half an hour (30 min) to put United in the lead by halftime.
Leeds leveled at the start of the second half with a sensational strike from Luke Ayling but two more goals from the irrepressible Bruno (to seal his first hat-trick) and other goals from Mason Greenwood and Fred provided the perfect welcome back for an Old Trafford full house.
Paul Pogba sets Man Utd Premier League record
Paul Pogba became the first Manchester United player to register four assists in a single Premier League game during Saturday’s thumping 5-1 victory over Leeds at Old Trafford.
The Frenchman in exhilarating form assisted Bruno(2), Greenwood, and Fred to seal in what was his very best performance for the club since his transfer from Juventus, 5 years ago.
Pogba’s display, meanwhile, represented an emphatic response to those that doubted his commitment to the cause might be some way less than the total given he has entered the final year of his contract and continues to be linked with a move to PSG.
Speaking about Pogba’s future at his pre-match press conference, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: ‘It’s been spoken and written about so often but every discussion I have had with Paul is a positive one.
‘He knows what we want and hopefully, it stays in the background, and Paul and us will make a decision together.
Defender Raphael Varane announced
Prior to kick-off on Saturday afternoon, the club’s new signing Raphael Varane, whose transfer from Real Madrid was confirmed was announced and paraded in front of the United faithful to a rapturous standing ovation that set the tone for a memorable opening to the campaign.
Jadon Sancho makes United debut
Another new face, Jadon Sancho, also made his bow for the Red Devils as a second-half substitute in what was a perfect afternoon for Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer.
