ADJUMANI DISTRICT, UGANDA: The Adjumani Chief Administrative Officer {CAO} Mr. Wanje Michael has interdicted two health workers over theft of drugs and medical supplies.
The interdicted health workers are Igama Geofrey a theatre assistant attached to Mungula health center IV in Itirikwa sub-county and Angualiga Bosco a watchman working at Ajugopi Health Center II in Dzaipi sub-county, Adjuman district.
In his letter dated August 8, 2021, CAO Wanje Michael instructed the two health workers to immediately hand over government property in their possessions to the supervisors and vacate their places of work.
The duo, Igama 37, a resident of Rassia East village in Pachara Sub County, and Angualiga a resident of Ringa village in Dzaipi Sub County were on July 4, 2021, charged in Adjumani grade one magistrate’s court with three counts of theft.
Prosecution alleged that the accused persons and others still at large at Mungula health center IV and Ajugopi health center II stole coarterm drugs valued at shs 2m [two million shillings]
The accused persons were also charged with receiving and retaining stolen property and unlawful possession of government stores, both pleaded not guilty and court remanded them till July 17, 2021, when they were finally granted bail.
Theft of drugs, medical equipment, and other medical supplies by health workers is on the rise since the beginning of the year, the cumulative number of health workers who have been interdicted has now reached four.
The in-charge laboratory Mungula health center IV Opio Daniel also faces interdiction over alleged theft of 20 boxes of covid-19, diagnostic kits, he was recently arrested by the police and released on bond as the resident state attorney peruses his file.
