KAMPALA, UGANDA: President Museveni has appointed seven new judges, with five at the High Court judges and two sent to the Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court justices.
“In exercise of the powers vested in the President by Article 142(1) of the 1995 Constitution, I have, acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, appointed persons listed below as Justices of the Appeal and Judges of the High Court, respectively,” a letter dated August 13, 2021, signed by the President reads in part.
Museveni in the letter appointed Jinja Resident Judge, Eva Luswata Kawuma, and the Deputy Solicitor General, Christopher Gashirabake have been appointed to the Court of Appeal.
The five judges appointed to serve in the High court include; Mr. Tom Chemutai, Mr. Vincent Wagona, Mrs. Alice Kyomuhangi, Florence Nakachwa, and Lawrence Tweyanze.
The President has since submitted the names of the appointees to the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah for vetting and approval.
The appointment of the five High Court judges once approved will bring the total number of judges to 67 which is less by 15 of the approved Parliament structure for High Court judges (82 judges), while the appointment of three justices to the Court of Appeal now brings the total number of justices to the second-highest court to 17.
