MPIGI, UGANDA: Two people were confirmed dead on spot on Sunday evening following a nasty accident that involved Buhweju County Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Francis Mwijukye along the Mpigi – Masaka highway.
The accident occurred at around 6 pm at Mbizzinya–Kyengera Village near Buwama Town in Mpigi district after the Mwijukye’s vehicle, a Land Cruiser Prado car with a personalized number plate ‘MP WAITU’, knocked two pedestrians dead and injured a motorcyclist who was riding a bike Registration Number UDX577E.
The deceased have been identified as Florence Nabukenya, 13, and Tadeous Lubyayi, 9- both from the same family and residents of Mbizinya Village, Buwama Town Council.
Mwijukye was with three other occupants in the car including his wife who police have said sustained minor injuries and are currently being hospitalized.
James Mulindwa, an Eyewitness at the scene told this website that the legislator survived lynching by some angry residents who accused the MP of reckless driving before police rushed to the scene to save them.
“The MP’s driver was speeding and it appeared like he was chasing a convoy which was ahead of him. He first knocked the two children before ramming into a motorcycle,” Mulindwa said.
Katonga Regional Police Spokesperson, Ms. Lydia Tumushabe attributed the accident to overspeeding by MP Mwijukye’s driver, identified as James Barekye who has since been arrested by police.
“The Honourable and other occupants who were in his vehicle are safe. Both wreckages of the vehicle and motorcycle are parked at Buwama police station pending police inspection,” She said.
Tumushabe added that the motorcyclist sustained a broken leg and was rushed to Gombe Hospital for medication but was on Monday morning pronounced dead raising the death toll to three.
The Kampala–Masaka Road is the most accident-prone stretch of highway in Uganda, recording between 200 and 300 fatalities annually.
