Café Javas breaks silence on ‘viral milkshake’ saga

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Café Javas Restaurant (CJs) has finally opened up on the alleged video of a customer that shook up the internet this week alleging that she had been served a blended milkshake containing a ‘dead vermin (rat).

The video that has been making rounds since Thursday shows a woman complaining after finding a rat in her Cafe Javas milkshake. According to the woman, she found the rat after almost finishing the expensive milkshake.

“This is a rat I found in my milkshake from Cafe Javas, yeah the people we feel so proud of…and they tell me to have this worked upon, I need to get a lawyer,” the customer is heard saying in the video.

However, in a press statement released via its social on Friday, August 27, the management of Cafe Javas has publicly denied the allegations labeling the incident as a falsified story with intentions to tarnish its protected brand.

According to Cafe Javas, the alleged incident happened on Tuesday 24th August 2021 at approximately 2:46 pm when two customers ordered oreo and caramel milkshakes to take away before later returning the next day to complain how they had been served with a vermin inside the milkshake tin.

Cafe Javas says after a thorough investigation process and review of the CCTV footage of the preparation and service of their order, it was confirmed that there was no adulteration of the milkshake but the customer instead reacted to circulate the video if not paid a sum of money she demanded.

“The customer was duly informed of the findings to which she reacted by threatening to circulate a video of her version of events if she was not paid a certain sum of money,” CJs’ statement reads in part.

The Restaurant adds that the circulation of the video further led to the distortion of its logo an implication that the aim of the disheartened people wasn’t only intended to bring its business into disrepute, but its brand as well.

“On viewing the video making rounds on sections of social media and in addition to our independent investigations, it is our considered opinion that these claims are in bad faith, untrue, malicious, and intended to bring our business into disrepute. The circulation of the malicious video has further led to a distortion of our logo,” the statement adds.

Adding that; “CJ’s has painstakingly built goodwill and reputation over the years and where errors genuinely happen, we own up and take full responsibility. However, in this particular incident, there was no error on our part, either in the preparation, presentation, or serving of the milkshakes. It is, therefore, unacceptable for one to tarnish our otherwise good image and undermine the hard work and dedication of our staff.”
