NWOYA, UGANDA: Elephants have trampled to death a 40-year old man in Nwoya district. The deceased has been identified as Celestino Odongo, a resident of Kole district.
The incident happened on Sunday evening from Koch Lii sub county, three kilometers inside the Murchison Falls National Park in Nwoya district along the Karuma-Pakwach highway.
It is reported that the deceased was being carried by his nephew Dick Ogwang on a Bajaj motorcycle registration number UEM 276D when they rammed into the herd of elephants.
In his statement to police at Anaka Central Police Station, Ogwang says that he was overtaking a lorry when he rammed into the herds of elephants.
Ogwang disclosed that he dropped the motorcycle and fled for his life, however, it was late for Odongo to take off for safety since he had fallen down.
Odongo was then trampled to death by the elephants and it was not possible for the rangers of the Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA to rescue him on time.
Justine Odong, the Koch Lii sub county chairperson has regretted the incident saying that elephants have over time posed the danger of deaths and destruction of properties in the area.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson told URN on Monday that a case of sudden death has been entered at Anaka Central Police Station vide SD: 36/12/09/2021, adding that the body has been taken to Anaka General Hospital.
