KAMPALA, UGANDA: Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) councilors have today passed a motion to rename selected city roads after late businessman Dr. Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige, alias BMK, and deceased Kampala Orthodox Archbishop Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga.
The move according to councilors is to recognize the fallen businessman and Archbishop for their great contribution towards the development of the city and country at large.
BMK was last week pronounced dead after battling prostate cancer for years. He is most remembered for being the proprietor of Hotel Africana, a hospitality empire stretching across East Africa, among other wealthy business enterprises he leaves behind.
While his Eminence the Archbishop Jonah Lwanga passed on last week in Greece where he had been hospitalized.
During a council meeting today (on Wednesday, Sept 15), the lord councilors resolved that Wampewo Avenue along which the late’s “Hotel Africana” is located to be renamed ‘BMK Avenue’ as an honor for his generous and honest entrepreneur whose business inspired several people.
The councilors also agreed that the road connecting Masiro road to Nakibinge road in Namungoona be renamed Yonah Lwanga road as an honor of the late Orthodox Archibishop for his service towards the church in Uganda.
“Right Honorable Speaker and Honorable colleagues, I, therefore, move that the road connecting Masiro rad to Nakibinge road be named His Eminence the Most Reverend Jonah Lwanga,” Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura said at the council sitting.
According to clause 6(10) of Kampala City road naming guidelines issued by KCCA’s Directorate of Physical Planning in 2017, the President of the Republic of Uganda, Cabinet, Parliament of Uganda, KCCA council and division councils may by presidential order or special resolution assign or rename an existing road.
In 2017, the KCCA council headed by Mr Lukwago renamed Nakivubo Mews after former Kampala City Mayor and businessman John Ssebaana Kizito.
John Ssebaana Kizito road stretches from the Clock Tower and joins Namirembe road at the Ham shopping ground. Most of the city roads are renamed after foreign personalities.
