Archbishop Jonah Lwanga’s body to arrive Saturday

Deceased: Archibishop Jonah Lwanga

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The body of the fallen Orthodox Church Archbishop in Uganda, the Most. Rev. Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga will finally arrive in the country on Saturday this weekend, the DailyExpress reports.

Archbishop Lwanga, 77, was pronounced dead on September 5, after being hospitalized in the Greek capital Athens due to cancer-related complications.

While his body was expected to arrive on Monday this week, the Orthodox church further announced that there would be some delays in the arrival as the Government of Greece insisted on conducting a thorough post-mortem to ensure that there are no questions about the Archbishop’s death, given his importance.

The delay was also reportedly delayed by Covid19 protocols.

However, Vice President of Uganda HE Jessica Alupo yesterday confirmed that the body of the fallen cleric is set to arrive this weekend after meeting Greek envoys in Uganda.

“Our Ambassador to Greece H.E Elizabeth Napeyok has confirmed, the body will be in Uganda on Saturday Morning. There was a delay in its repatriation, due to the stringent COVID-19 protocols in Greece,” Alupo said.

Archbishop Lwanga will be accorded a state burial as per the directive of President Yoweri Museveni.
