Suspected ‘hit and run’ accident kills one in Iganga

IGANGA, UGANDA: Police in Iganga district are investigating into circumstances under which a yet-to-be-identified lady was involved in a suspected hit and run accident in the wee hours of Friday.

The accident occurred at Namasoga village, Bulamagi sub-county in Iganga district along Iganga-Jinja highway when the lady who appears to be in her 20s was reportedly knocked down by a motorist during curfew hours.

The body of the brown lady was discovered by a resident in the same village on Saturday morning who later informed Police.

According to Kaso Musa, one of the residents in the area says that the accident might have happened early morning on Saturday citing that the vehicle involved was not yet identified.

Kyebanakolanga Sulayi, a boda boda cyclist opposed the suspected accident saying that the lady might have been killed and her body dumped along the road. He said that the distance between the road and where the body was found clearly explains it.

While speaking to Daily Express, Chairperson LC 1 Namasoga village, Lubale Issa said that the lady was not known in the area and urged security officials to use their cameras and discovered what transpired in the night.

Lubale added that security should intensify patrols during the night such that residents are not suspicious when such incidents happen citing that on several occasions, people have been killed and dumped which leaves questions amongst the locals.

The Resident District Commissioner Iganga district, Deborah Mwesigwa Mugerwa has confirmed the incident saying that police responded and took the body to Iganga general hospital mortuary at Nakavule for autopsy as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, RDC Mwesigwa told Daily Express that the deceased wasn’t identified by press time since no identification document was recovered. She called upon those with missing people to cross-check with the Iganga hospital mortuary.
