Two perish in an accident along Iganga-Kaliro road

IGANGA, UGANDA: Two people have perished in an accident that occurred Wednesday morning at Bubogo cell, Namunkesu Ward, Namungarwe town council in Iganga district along Iganga-Kaliro road.

The accident involved a Motorcycle Bajaj boxer registration number UFH 583Q which rammed into a stationary Fuso registration number UBJ 477J.

The rider and the passenger on the Motorcycle which was from Kaliro to Iganga died on spot.

The deceased were identified as Isooba Ali, the rider, and Tandikwiza Esther, 26, the passenger and a resident of Zibondo Ward, Kaliro Town council in Kaliro district.

One of the Eyewitnesses and a boda boda cyclist, Byansi Farouk said that the rider was overspeeding and could avoid the accident in case the speed wasn’t high.

”The boda boda cyclist was over speeding and lost control, but if not over speeding then they would have survived the accident”, Byansi narrated.

One of the relatives to the deceased passenger, Kagoya Angela Irene, says that her sister-in-law met her death as she was traveling from Kaliro to Iganga early morning on Wednesday for business-related activities.

”My sister-in-law was going to Iganga Town for business shopping before involving in an accident”, Kagoya said.

The Youths Chairperson Namungarwe Town Council, Buyinza Abdurahim has called upon traffic police to strengthen operations along Iganga-Kaliro road and to stop vehicles that always park poorly along the way to the extent of making double parking.

”Traffic police should come in and stop trucks which park along this road and other trucks end up making double parking, we also request traffic officers to stop all those driving recklessly along this road since it will help to avoid such accidents” Buyinza appealed. He also urged Boda boda owners to always employ experienced riders to avoid accidents.

Busoga East Police Spokesperson, Diana Nandawula says that preliminary findings indicate that the accident was caused by reckless riding by the cyclist who rammed into a Fuso.

”The accident which occurred at around 6:30 am in the morning was caused by the reckless riding by the motorcycle rider who was over speeding and rammed into a stationary vehicle” Nandawula quoted eyewitnesses adding that the drivers and other road users should be mindful while on the road and avoid over speeding which she said is the major cause of accidents along this road.

”I urge the drivers and other road users to avoid over speeding as it is the root cause of many accidents in this area” She said.

The bodies were taken to Iganga general hospital Mortuary at Nakavule for postmortem as the Fuso vehicle and wreckages of the motorcycle were towed to Iganga Central Police Station.

”We have started investigations to establish the cause of the accident”, Nandawula said.

This accident has come just less than a month when the former councilor and NRM Mobilizer in Kigulu North constituency, Ibanda Nathan lost his life in a similar way along the same route. Ibanda died on September 6, this year when his motorcycle rammed into a stationery sugarcane truck.
