President Museveni to address the nation today

President Museveni

KAMPALA, UGANDA: President Yoweri Museveni is set to address the nation on Friday 1 October 2021, the Senior Presidential Press Secretary Lindah Nabusayi Wamboka announced Thursday.

According to Nabusayi’s tweet, the President will address Ugandans on matters of national importance.

“@KagutaMuseveni will address the Nation tomorrow, October 01, 2021, on matters of National importance starting at 8 pm from SL Nakasero,” Nabusayi tweeted on Thursday.

The Presidential address like other addresses will be broadcast live on all Television and Radio Stations.

President Museveni according to inside sources at State House is expected to touch on the debate that has been raging about his proposal to amend the constitution to remove the right to bail for suspects in serious crimes.

In his speech earlier this week, Museveni wants people arrested in crimes such as murder and treason to be automatically disqualified from filing for bail.

The President’s proposal has so far enlisted little support, even among his closest allies, and attracted retrieval from the political opposition and outspoken human rights defenders.

During a meeting, earlier this week with members of his NRM Party caucus at Kololo, all 10 MPs who spoke on the matter, reportedly opposed this proposal.

Museveni however, insists that granting bail to serious offenders is a “provocation” to the affected members of the community.

Museveni’s push for the bail amendment followed the arrest and detention of two members of parliament Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya, on allegations that they planned the recent machete murders in the Masaka area.

The MPs have since been rearrested after they were granted bail, and charged with new offences.
