JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA: The Uganda National Women’s Football Team “Crested Cranes” have been eliminated from the ongoing COSAFA Women Championship in South Africa following their 1-0 loss to Zambia on Tuesday.
Zambia’s captain Grace Chanda scored the only goal in the 37th minute. This was the last game of the group stages that the Crested Cranes needed to win to progress to the knockout stage.
The defeat saw the Cranes finish the competition with four points while Zambia qualified to the next round with nine positions and nine goals scored. The team’s only win in the competition came in a 5-1 thrashing of Eswatini on Sunday.
The Women’s national team has failed to emulate their Juniors, the U17 side that won the junior version of the tournament in 2019 in Mauritius.
This was the second time the Crested Cranes have featured at this annual Championship as a guest team. The first time came in 2018, and Uganda finished third.
