Court Martial sentences eight over illegal possession of firearms

MOROTO, UGANDA: The 3rd Division Court Martial sitting in Moroto barracks has convicted 8 suspects for illegal possession of firearms and handed them sentences varying between 5 and 10 years.

They are Lokira Peter, Loile Lodipi, Meriya Lokiru, Gino Mukas Napudakwi, Achia Marino, Lodia Andrew, Aboka Joseph Lokusi and Lepers Esiwat.

Capt. Edrin Mawanda, the UPDF 3rd division spokesperson says the 3rd Division Court Martial chairperson Col. Francis Kateraho convicted the accused on their own plea of guilt.

He explains that the suspects were arrested in the ongoing disarmament exercise in the Karamoja region.

According to Capt. Mawanda, Lokira Peter, Loile Lodipi, Meriya Lokiru and Gino Mukas Napudakwi got a ten-year jail term, Achia Marino and Andrew Lodia 9 years, while Aboka Joseph Lokusi and Lepers Esiwat will serve for five years.

Capt. Edrin Mawanda says that UPDF and other sister security agencies like the police are committed on the ground to conduct continuous operations until they recover all illegal firearms from criminals.

The army has since managed to recover several cows, 91 guns and 929 ammunition in the region.
