KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police have started a manhunt for a casual laborer for raping and strangling a 10-year-girl to death in Nakawa division, a Kampala city suburb.
The suspect has been identified as Gerald Sematiko, who was working for the deceased’s Grandmother is a resident of Katogo zone in Kinawataka, Nakawa division in Kampala.
According to locals raped the minor in the night and strangled her to death to cover his crime.
“He stuffed the body in a sack and dumped it in the nearby drainage channel hoping that rain would wash it away before fleeing,” Yakuti Waiswa the zone defence secretary said.
KMP Deputy Spokesperson Mr. Luke Owoyesigire said police after mounting a search in Ssematiko’s room recovered a blood-stained mosquito net, blanket, two cups, and half stick of marijuana.
Yakuti tasked police to hunt down the suspect and other criminals who have been selling him the banned substances. The deceased’s body is lying at Kampala Capital City Authority mortuary pending a post-mortem.
At least 1,500 children are abused or tortured annually, according to statistics from the Uganda Police Force. However, the convictions of the abusers of children in court are as low as 45 per 1,500 cases.
