HOIMA, UGANDA: Rally ace driver Rajiv Ruparelia on Saturday trounced motorsport bigwigs to emerge the champion of this year’s Kabalega Rally championship in Hoima.
The rally which was the fifth round of the National Rally Championship (NRC5) took place on Saturday, October 23, 2021.
Cruising in a VW Polo, Rajiv and his co-driver Enoch Olinga of the Ruparelia Rally Team put pedal to the metal to keep within the top times of the event and make up for a delay suffered due to a mechanical glitch in the opening stage of the event.
The pair crossed finish line in one hour, 45 minutes and 41seconds to claim victory in the one-day rally.
Duncan “Kikankane” Mubiru, who had hope of winning this rally to claim his maiden NRC title, finished second after he crossed finish line in one hour, 45 minutes, 46seconds.
Ronald Ssebuguzi and Omar Mayanja finished third and fourth respectively.
Despite the result of the Kabalega rally edition, Mubiru still tops the NRC title race with 350 points followed by Hassan Alwi on 280 points.
“It was a great event although I had a bit of mishap in the first stage. I had to play a bit with the car and get it out. (The) rest was okay,” said Rajiv.
The Kabalega Rally Edition win was also Rajiv’s maiden National Rally Championship victory.
The next and final round of the championship will head to Jinja on 26-28 November.
