KAMPALA, UGANDA: President Museveni has appointed former Special Forces Commander Maj Gen Don Nabasa as the new commander of Military Police in the latest forces reshuffles.

The Army deputy spokesperson, Lt. Col Ronald Kakulungu confirmed the new development on Monday evening. “Yes, it is true he (Nabasa) will head military police,” Kakurungu said when contacted in a telephone interview.

Nabasa who has served as the contingent commander in Somalia under AMISOM for about a year before will now swap positions with Brig Keith Katungi, who has been the commander of military police with the latter being named the new contingent commander in Somalia.

Maj. Gen Nabasa’s appointment comes at a time when the country is beginning to experience domestic terrorism attacks with two explosions reported in a space of three days.

On Monday (yesterday), a bomb explosion on a Swift Safaris bus in Lungala-Mpigi claimed two lives and scores injured, coming exactly two days after another bomb attack at Digida pork Joint in Komamboga, Kampala, which killed one person, leaving several others injured.

Nabasa’s return also coincides with planned political protests by the opposition aimed at forcing President Museveni out of power.

Nabasa, who returned from a military course last year before being sent to Somalia, was expected to conclude his tour of duty in December 2021.

Officials said in a radio message that appointing Nabasa to military police came before the bomb explosions in Central Uganda.

“The incoming contingency has to report to Sign for orientation,” said a source, adding, “Nabasa will swap positions with Katungi in December, 2021.”
