KAMPALA, UGANDA: The former Chief Justice of Uganda, Mr. Bart Magunda Katureebe was on Friday installed as the new Chancellor at Uganda Management Institute (UMI), the DailyExpress reports.
UMI is a government-owned national center for training, research, and consultancy in the field of management and administration in the country.
Katureebe becomes the first male chancellor of Uganda Management Institute and will serve a term of fours at the helm of the institution. He replaces former education Minister Namirembe Bitamazire who has held the office since 2013.
The installation exercise held at UMI campus in Kampala on Friday, October 29, 2021, was presided over by the Vice President of Uganda, Ms. Jessica Alupo, who represented President Museveni, the Chief Visitor of all academic institutions by law.
VP Alupo handed Mr. Katureebe the instruments of power, which included the mace, a copy of the Constitution of Uganda, University and other tertiary institutions Acts as amended 2003- 2006, a copy of instruments appointing him as a Chancellor, the cap and gown.
“The mace you are receiving today symbolizes your authority upon the institute and what Uganda Management Institute stands for,” Alupo said.

Katureebe promised to improve on research at the government-owned institution as well as promoting it to the general public.
‘’I promise to work closely with the management of the institution and the government to promote this institution. I will learn from all the people that I shall interact with and I will share my experience of my service from 1975. I will build linkages for this institution not only to do research for academic purposes but impart on the lives of this country,” Katureebe said on Friday.
Council members of the institution, senior lecturers, and members of the institution student’s guild council attended the function.
Justice Katureebe retired as Uganda’s Chief Justice in June 2020 after five years of service, having clocked 70 years of age.
The former Chief Justice had a wide-ranging career before becoming a member of Uganda’s Supreme Court, and his legacy includes introducing an electronic case management system for the country.
Among the many international bodies with which he was associated, he was a founding member of the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts. In the tribute paid to him by that organization, SIFoCC said he had always championed collaboration between judiciaries, the importance of training and case management, and the sharing of best practices between courts.
