KAMPALA, UGANDA: Kawempe North MP Muhammad Segirinya’s health is reportedly in a deteriorating condition after being rapidly admission at Mulago National Referral Hospital, online newspaper ChimpReports reported on Tuesday night.
A doctor at Mulago who preferred anonymity in an exclusive phone interview with the publication said; “If Segirinya is not flown out of Uganda for specialised care, the worst is possible.”
The development comes barely a day after the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Anita Among said Parliament is ready to do whatever it takes including flying the Hon Segirinya abroad for treatment after reports of his ill health in Murchison bay prison where he is under detention.
The publication further reports that Ssegirinya was in a critical condition this past Saturday when he was moved from the Prison to Mulago hospital for an urgent medical attention.
However, doctors at Mulago refused to disclose Segirinya’s illness saying they did not have the authority from the prison bosses to unleash such information.
The lawmaker, who was recently incarcerated alongside fellow lawmaker Allan Ssewanyana (NUP, Makindye West) at Kitalya Prison over alleged involvement in two murders in Masaka, is admitted to Mulago as a private patient.
Segirinya’s lawyer Erias Lukwago today expressed concern over Ssegirinya’s condition, saying he feared the worst.
The popular MP was briefly admitted at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya in April 2021.
The prosecution accuses Segirinya and Ssewanyana of the murders of Francis Mugerwa Kiiza alias Nswa and Sulaiman Kakooza in Settaala cell, Masaka City – claims they dismissed as “politically motivated.”
On September 27, Segirinya was freed on bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala only to be re-arrested by security operatives on fresh charges of treason and incitement to violence.
In a recent virtual court appearance, Segirinya showed the judge how his feet were rotting away as a result of an illness.
Parliament can’t do much
Speaker Jacob Oulanyah recently said Parliament may not do much, since the law has to take its due course, and that Parliamentary privileges are limited to their speech in plenary.
“Charges have been preferred and they have been remanded; Parliamentary Privileges have limitations…when you become an MP, you cannot engage in any act [because] the privilege is confined to free speech in the House,” he said.
He added: “When a Member of this House has been found in conflict with the law, the law must take its course. Once these processes have started, we cannot interfere; let’s respect the court process for now.”
The recent Masaka murders have divided politicians, with the opposition crying foul and the government insisting there is a hand of politics in the harrowing criminality.
In a recent speech, President Museveni said the murders are politically motivated but added that the security and intelligence apparatus will clamp down on the perpetrators.
At a news conference, the duo’s lawyer Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago slammed the charges as politically motivated.
