President Museveni meets Indian Community in Uganda

KAMPALA, UGANDA: President Yoweri K. Museveni has pledged the country’s continued friendship with India, its people, and the Indian Community in Uganda.

He said this in the meeting with India’s Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan. During their meeting, the two countries agreed to a partnership to provide affordable solar power and promote rural power transmission in Uganda.

“I thank Shri Vellamvelly Muraleedharan for the visit and pledge Uganda’s continued friendship with the Republic of India, its people, and the Indian Community in Uganda,” President Museveni tweeted shortly after the meeting.

“In my meeting with India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Shri Vellamvelly Muraleedharan at State House Entebbe, we agreed to a partnership to provide affordable solar power and promote rural power transmission in Uganda,” he added.

During the visit, Uganda’s Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem said that India remains a strong and reliable partner in Uganda’s quest for industrial development and overall economic transformation.

He said, India continues to be a strategic partner for Uganda in development and noted with satisfaction numerous projects such as the Bhabhatron Radiotherapy machine. Mr. Muraleedharan is currently on a thre-day visit to Uganda.

Minister Shri Vellamvelly Muraleedharan, was in the company of Businessman & Honorary Consul to Nepal, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia & Members of the Indian Community in Uganda.

Minister Shri Vellamvelly Muraleedharan took to Twitter to applaud President Museveni for the warm welcome saying; “Delighted to have called-on Hon’ble President of Uganda Kaguta Museveni. Conveyed greetings of PM Narendra Modi Ji. The President praised the Indian community in Uganda for their significant contributions”.

The Indian Minister revealed how he had a fruitful and engaging discussion with his Ugandan counterpart Okello Oryem. He also met Minister of States Finance Henry Musaafi and agreed to work together in diversified areas and take the relationship further ahead between the two nations.

“Had fruitful & engaging discussion with H.E.Henry Okello Oryem, MoS Foreign Affairs of Uganda. Glad MoS Finance H.E.Henry Musaafi also joined. Reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relationship,” he tweeted. “Agreed to work together in diversified areas & take the relationship further ahead,” he added further.

Muraleedharan met with the Indian diaspora in Kampala and attended the Indian Business Forum held by the Indian Association of Uganda during his visit. He also spoke at an event hosted by the Uganda Investment Authority.

Muraleedharan had also paid his respects to Mahatma Gandhi’s bust in Jinja. This is where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed, and where the Mahatma Gandhi Heritage Centre (MGHC) is slated to be built.

On Twitter, he stated that at Jinja, Uganda’s headwaters of the Nile River, Mahatma Gandhi was honoured and Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were buried in this area.
