Members of the parliamentary Health Committee are carrying out an inspection of Health Centres within the western Region assessing the conditions of various Hospitals in the region.
On Thursday afternoon, the legislators made an abrupt visit to Kigorobya Health Centre 2 in Kigorobya Sub county in Hoima District where they were surprised to find the health centre’s mortuary turned into a medical store.
Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa the Rukungiri Municipality Legislator also a of the Health Committee wonders why the leaders of the Health facility decided to use the mortuary as their medical store.
“It’s so disappointing to see medical items in a mortuary a place reserved for dead bodies, this act does not meet with the national health standards”. Dr. Rutahigwa said.
He adds that Kigorobya Health Centre 2 accommodates many people but lacks a medical theater and many other medical facilities.
Hon. Rutahigwa further directed the officer in charge of the Health Centre to immediately look for an alternative place where to store medical items rather than a mortuary.
“As a Health Committee, we are going to seat and find ways how to solve such problems, however the officer in charge of this health should look for an alternative place to store these medical items”. Dr. Rutahigwa adds.
Dr. Joseph Ruyonga the Hoima West Division Legislator also a member of the committee says, they are going to consider such problems hindering the health department during the budget allocation.
“This is the appropriate time to look for some core areas where the National Budget for 2022/2023 to be allocated, so as a committee, we are to forward such problems at the health center so that during the time of the budget formation they are considered,” Dr. Ruyonga said.
Dr. Lawrence Baluku the Officer in charge of Kigorobya Health Centre 2 says that they turned a mortuary into a medical store due to lack of enough space to accommodate a large number of patients received at the health facility.
” Kigorobya Health Centre 2 receives more than 55,000 patients per year and serves Sub counties of Kigorobya, Kigorobya Town council, Kapapi, Bombo among others which are too many to accommodate,” Dr. Baluku said.
