KAKUMIRO, UGANDA: Residents of Mwitanzige Sub county in Kakumiro district are calling for the government intervention following the heavy rains that devastated the area leaving at least 30 houses and crop gardens spoilt.
Heavy rains characterised by heavy winds washed villages of Rwengeye, Karokarungi A, Kiteebe and Kanyansi all of Mwitanzige Sub county started on Sunday night leaving hundreds of people homeless.
Shariff Kabagambe the Mwitanzige west local council chairperson says 2 churches houses and many crop gardens were destroyed in his area.
Meanwhile the affected residents have expressed fear of hunger outbreak in their area since their crop gardens were washed away.
Frank Ompaire the Mwitanzige Sub county chairperson says most of the residents do not have where to rest since their houses have been swept by the heavy downpour.
“Now residents are lacking what to eat and where to rest since the Sunday night’s down pour destroyed everything” Said Hon. Ompaire. Adding that the sub county is likely to face famine and poverty since the indigenous people mainly depend on agriculture.
Ompaire later asked the government and donor agencies to provide aid to his people both financial and food assistance in the affected areas.
” We are calling upon the government of Uganda and other donor companies in the country to help us with aid like housing, food and financial aid since they’ve been left hopeless” Said Ompaire.
