Stephen Asiimwe appointed new PSFU Executive Director

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Stephen Asiimwe has been appointed the new executive director of Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), the largest private-sector body in the country.

Asiimwe replaces Gideon Badagawa who succumbed to Covid-19 in June and will now take over from deputy Executive Director, Francis Kisirinya who has been serving as the acting Executive Director for the last four months.

The PSFU Board chairman, Dr. Elly Karuhanga announced on Friday, November 26, 2021, that Stephen Asiimwe is now its new Executive Director adding that his appointment as ED takes immediate effect.

‘The board would like to particularly thank Mr. Kisirinya for leading the transitional process. The board also appreciates management and staff for the great work of holding the ship,’ said Karuhanga in a statement.

Adding: ‘Asiimwe has experience spanning over 30 years in both government and private sector at management, leadership and business leadership levels in Uganda and globally. 

‘We request you to give him complete cooperation so that he can deliver the best of his services for the benefits of the staff, Board, PSFU members, the private sector and Uganda as a whole.’

Before his appointment, Asiimwe has been the PFSU’s director of policy and business development, a position he has served in for one year.

When contacted Friday morning, Asiimwe was upbeat and said the experience and networks he has built in his three decades of work in the media, private sector, government, regional and international organization will come in handy.

Calling it a ‘new venture’, Asiimwe said he is also energized by the team around him. ‘There is a very good team at PSFU. I think we have a winning team to usher Uganda into a new economic dispensation,’ he said.

Who is Stephen Asiimwe?

Asiimwe has previously served at the helm of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) – from 2014-2019. Before joining UTB, he was the chief executive and Editor-in-Chief of the East African Business Week from 2004 to 2014.

He also worked at New Vision as a reporter, sub-editor and Business Editor from 1993-2004. He holds a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Management from the US-based Development Associates International (DAI) affiliated to Uganda Christian University (UCU).

He is also a BA Social Sciences graduate of Political Science and Sociology from Makerere University. Asiimwe has a host of post-graduate certificates and diplomas in Management, Education, Marketing, IT and Corporate Governance, among others.
