KIKUUBE, UGANDA: More than 100 people in Kyabayanja village, Kimbugu Parish, Kabwoya Sub county in Kikuube district are out in the cold following heavy rains that destroyed their houses and several acres of crop gardens.
The rains and winds that started on Saturday night at destroyed several banana plantations, other food crop gardens, and houses, leaving over 100 residents homeless. The rains also blew off the roof of Kyabayanja Catholic Church.
Alex Byaruhanga one of the affected residents says that the heavy rains coupled with strong winds started at around 8 pm.
“Over 15 houses and one church were destroyed, I myself, I lost my two goats which were killed the heavy rains coupled with strong winds destroyed their house”. Byaruhanga said.
He adds that all his food crop gardens were destroyed and he is worried, whether he will be able to send back his children to school next year on the school reopening since he solely depends on agriculture as the main source of income.
“Our gardens have been destroyed so we are likely to face hunger, also most of the residents in Kyabayanja depends on agriculture so it may be a challenge to parents to send their children to school next year on the official school reopening since their main source of income have been destroyed”. Byaruhanga added.
Milton Tumuramye also a resident says he was left homeless with a family of 12 people after the heavy rains coupled with strong winds took away the roofings of his house.
“We are asking government of Uganda and other donor companies to come and help us with emergency shelters where to rest our souls as we prepare to reconstruct our home”. Tumuramye said.
Marriam Kabebe also one of the affected residents wonders if she manage to look after her family of seven people after all her crop gardens were washed away and hence left with nothing to feed them.
